2019/2020 Competition

For this seventh edition of the competition, Eduki and its partners are calling on young people from all over Switzerland to share their vision for a more peaceful, just and inclusive society.

Express your ideas through art, media or an idea for concrete action towards a sustainable future for all.

Peace, the cornerstone of sustainable development

The world has set a deadline for the year 2030 to reduce extreme poverty and take action to save the planet. By adopting their 15-year action plan with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), UN Member States have given a strong and clear signal of their commitment to work together to tackle the root causes of inequality and guarantee a sustainable development for all people around the world.
Without peace, sustainable development is impossible. The Eduki 2019/2020 competition offers participants the opportunity to explore SDG16, which seeks to promote inclusive and peaceful societies for sustainable development [SDG16 link] and to consider topics such as:

What is peace here and elsewhere?
How will achieving SDG16 help reach other SDGs?
Which people and what institutions in Switzerland strive for peace?
What actions can be undertaken at different levels to build more peaceful, just and inclusive societies?

Reflect on these and other issues relating to SDG16 and use your creativity to imagine messages and ideas of action for peace. Your contributions will be presented at the Awards ceremony held at UN Geneva on 29 April 2020.

A procedure for participating is detailed below. But before that, subscribe to our mailing list so as not to miss any information about the competition.

How to participate

Choose a category
Artwork
Express your ideas through art, be it visual, digital, a literary project or performing arts (more details in the rules of the competition). All forms of expression are welcome as long as they raise awareness around you (school, family, community) about the challenges of SDG 16.

Instructions to follow:
1. A technical sheet with mandatory fields (description of the work, explanation of the process followed) must be filled out on the competition webpage before 1 March 2020.
2. An image of the visual art or digital art in a JPEG format must be uploaded on the Competition
  webpage. For literary or performing arts projects, a document of maximum ten pages in a PDF
  format must be uploaded on the Competition webpage. Other photos or documents may be
  attached to illustrate the process followed.
3. Warning! The artwork must be anonymous (do not put the name of the student or the institution on the artwork, nor in the name of the JPEG file).
4. The original version of the visual art must be available for presentation to the jury on request or
  as an exhibit during the awards ceremony..
Media realisation
Do you have an idea for a video project, a film project (documentary or fiction), a street interview, a radio show, a video game, a website or a music video? Anything that makes use of video production skills (shooting, editing, sound recording, etc.), computer coding or radio production is accepted in the competition! Just think about how your work can raise awareness around you (school, family, community) about the challenges of SDG 16.

Instructions to follow:
1. A technical sheet with mandatory fields (description of the media production, explanation of the process followed) must be filled out on the competition website before 1 March 2020.
2. Media production in MP3 or MP4 format must be submitted via the competition website before 1 March 2020.
3. The duration of the media production (video or audio) must not exceed 3 minutes.
4. The work must be done by the pupils (Editing plan, written or spoken comments), but they may be assisted or advised by one or more adults.
5. Warning! The project must be anonymous (do not include the student or the school’s name in the work, nor in the name of the file submitted).
Concrete Action
Do you have an idea of an action that raises awareness about peace around you, or that contributes to SDG 16? Your project (or idea for a project) is a practical way of putting the theme of this competition into action. So what are you waiting for? Take action for peace!
Please note that the submitted project can be in the conception phase (project idea), in the process of being executed or
already completed within twelve months preceding the deadline for submitting entries (i.e. March 1, 2020).

Instructions to follow:
1. A technical sheet with mandatory fields (description of the project, explanation of the process followed) must be filled out on the Competition webpage by 1 March 2020.
2. A video of no longer than two minutes in MP4 format, without subtitles, that briefly presents the project must be submitted via the Competition webpage by 1 March 2020.
3. Presentation dossier of the completed or planned project of a maximum of ten pages in PDF format with the following fields: idea, goal(s), relevance to the theme, available resources, planning, budget, process, and impact(s). Photos and/ or videos can be attached.
4. One person must be designated as the main person responsible for the project.
5. Warning! The document must be anonymous (do not include the student or the school’s name in the work or in the name of the submitted file).

To register

Once you have chosen your category, register using the button located in the upper right column of this page. Fill in the information requested and designate someone to be in charge (this can be an adult). We will be in contact with that person.

Registrations are open for students enrolled in Switzerland at the primary level (around 4-12 years), secondary I (around 12-15 years) or secondary II (around 16-19 years old). It is possible to register individually, by group, by class or by institution.

Registrations open on 3 September 2019 and close on 1 March 2020. Once your registration is validated, you will be redirected to your personal space where you can modify your personal information, save documents by adding them to your favourites and see your competition entry. A user can make several registrations (for example, a teacher can register multiple students, groups or institutions).

You can login to your personal area at any time by clicking on the sidebar icon on the right side of your screen or on the dedicated icon at the top right of the site (next to the search field).

Prepare with the help of Eduki

Once registered, it is time to prepare your project. First of all, we recommend that you read the following documents carefully: the competition rules, which will enable you to better understand the jury's expectations (point 11: assessment criteria and point system), the document "10 Questions and Answers on SDG16 ", which will give you information on the theme and the document "Resources on SDG16", which contains useful links to educational or information resources.

The aim of the competition is to introduce young people to the work of international organizations (IOs) and other stakeholders in international cooperation in Switzerland. Book a visit or meeting with an IO or a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), a special guided tour of International Geneva and its work for peace, an interactive workshop on the SDGs as an introduction to the competition, or take part in our first Young Reporters Session, which will question the relationship that field reporters have with peace (for secondary school students only). Finally, you can also call on an expert in a particular field to advise you on the project you want to do (in collaboration with the Swiss Commission for UNESCO and Greycells): concours@eduki.ch

Be aware that it is important to document the development and creative phase of your project (using photos, videos or text) as the jury will also judge the process that led to the final result.

Send us your project before 1 March 2020

On the Eduki website in your “Personal space” you will be able to send in your project. In order to do so, click on "submit your project" under the "Competition" section and fill in the "Technical sheet". You have the option to save it and come back to finalize it later. Note that the Technical sheet is an integral part of the competition submission and therefore the jury will take into consideration what you enter into the fields provided. Therefore, we recommend that you take the time to complete all fields carefully.

The deadline to submit your project is 1 March 2020 (at 11:59 pm).

Once your work is submitted online, a panel of experts (the jury) for each category will select the best artwork, media or concrete action projects. They will award prizes to the winners of each school level (primary, secondary I and secondary II).

Participate in the awards ceremony on 29 April 2020

The awards ceremony is an unforgettable experience for any participant. Thanks to the distinguished support of the United Nations in Geneva, the ceremony will take place on 29 April 2020 in the unique setting of the Palais des Nations in Geneva. Several well-known figures from International Geneva and competition partners will be present to see the projects produced by students and their ideas for a more peaceful world.

All participants are invited to the event.

The winner and runner-up for each level and each category will receive prizes donated by our generous sponsors. These are usually excellent gifts or activities to do with your class close to your area.
An exhibition of selected projects will be on display at the UN for several days in May 2020. This in an opportunity to bring the youth’s message on peace to thousands of international officials and visitors to the Palais des Nations.

Submitting a project for the Françoise Demole Award

The big novelty of this year’s competition is the possibility to submit your project for the Françoise Demole Award endowed with up to 10,000 francs in order to make it a reality.

The Award is for Secondary II students registered in the concrete action category. In addition to the specific instructions for this category, projects submitted must incorporate a collaboration with at least one entity involved in international cooperation present in Switzerland (e.g. international organisation, non-governmental organisation,
association actively involved in global solidarity or development cooperation).

To apply to the Françoise Demole Award, you must tick the box provided for this purpose in the technical sheet (to be filled out when you submit your project; it is necessary to register for the competition in advance).

The Françoise Demole Committee is separate from the competition juries and is not bound by the decisions of the Competition.
